Some Smart Home Features

While smart homes are incredibly appealing to buyers, they can also be particularly susceptible to security breaches. Here’s some information that will help you to secure a smart home.

Change the default passwords. Smart home security devices often come with default passwords like 1234 that hackers can easily guess. Create a unique strong password. As tempting as it may seem to go with a familiar password it’s not worth the risk. First thing you need to do is change the default password.

Keep your smart home software updated. Your smart home requires regular security updates. Make sure to do your updates with the latest software patches.

Disable features you don’t need. Do you really need remote access to all your devices? If not, and you can go without, disable that and other features you can go without. You will also need to review the devices security settings and adjust any that are overly permissive.

Secure the wireless router. Secure your router with a strong password and use WPA2 encryption instead of WEP. Give your wireless router an obscure name that makes it harder for hackers to glean information they could use in a social engineering attack.
